lillie langtry was born emelie charlotte lebreton on the island of jersey in 1853. more than slightly recognized for her beauty lillie (never lily, which she did not like) quickly caught the attention of many men, including edward langtry whom she would marry and come to make his name more famous than he anticipated. an illness brought lillie away from edward's previously established home, forcing the couple to move to london where lillie's beauty, charm, and intelligence quickly gained her rising social status in london's high society. her beauty was adored by oscar wilde (who wrote the new helen for her as a tribute of love and adoration among other literary works), frank milais (the artist whose sketches of lillie would gain her worldwide fame), and prince albert edward (bertie) of wales, who would take her as his official mistress. lillie also shared close, intimate relationships with princess alexandra and the well-known actress sarah bernhardt, whose opinion of lillie contributed to lillie's own rise to the stage and world of theatre. while leading nothing to resemble a simple life lillie contributed greatly to society in more ways than she could have imagined.
